Rampant consumerism reared it's ugly head today, when a crowd of people rushed the doors at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, killing a 39 year old employee.

I came across this excellent flash map which details the spread of Wal-mart over the years. In the town I live they just bulldozed probably one of the last open spaces we had left to build a super Wal-mart center. Now not more than 10 minutes away in the next town over there is a perfectly good Wal-mart. So the question is how many do we really need? Check out the link below

I normally don’t post much, but this is one time I need my voice to be heard. I came across the following link on Twitter. What I read ripped at my heart and made me very angry.

We’re all aware of human rights violations in China, but what about Animal rights violations? I’m not going to go into a detailed breakdown as I want you to read the article for yourself. I will mention a few points:

It's a standard trope in environmental commentary: we would need more than one Earth to support the planet's population, especially if everyone lived like Americans. The number of Earths needed can vary greatly, depending upon who's doing the counting. 1.2? Two? Three? Five? Ten? It's a very fuzzy form of ecological accounting, much harder to calculate in any consistent and plausible way than (for example) carbon footprints. But the "N Earths" concept is dubious for reasons beyond simple account…

China has called on the international community to increase the flow of technology to developing countries to help them fight climate change.
Wan Gang, minister of science and technology, said developed nations "need to establish a mechanism for technological transfer" of environmentally friendly technology so developing countries can afford them.
China - which rivals the US as the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases - has pledged to raise energy efficiency but has declined…

I felt this was important enough to be placed in a blog post even though I didn't write it.
From: Elisabeth Rosenthal International Herald Tribune

NEW YORK: The mantra from businesses and politicians in the developed world is that technology will provide a solution to rising global emissions. Indeed, they say, fighting global warming can be good for business.
General Electric has rightly staked a claim to be an environmental leader by selling wind turbines. Wal-Mart is…
